RISSIK STREET
When I talk about Rissik Street, I am not referring to that busy street that runs from west to east across downtown Johannesburg, but to our own main street in that runs roughly east to west through downtown Haenertsburg.
No more than about 500 metres from one end to the other, it is home to twenty commercial enterprises or should I call them places where you can spend your money!
A garage, a bottle store, six restaurants, two grocery shops, four shops specialising in home crafted items, a hairdresser, two accommodation establishments, a bookshop, an art gallery and a company making and selling off-road caravans.
Not bad for a little old rural village!
Just as I cannot list all the birds that live in our forests or the grasses and wildflowers that grow on the Grasslands, I will not attempt to provide details of all the things you can eat, drink or take home with you, but I am prepared to bet that a walk along Rissik Street – it’s quite safe because the locals are very friendly – could be one of the highlights of your visit to the Mountain. And if you leave without buying anything at all, let us know and we will be happy to provide you with a complimentary copy of our seasonal magazine titled ‘Mountain Getaways.’ Or, look out for a copy next time you are in the area as it will give you so much more information than this humble old blogger could ever do. Incidentally, we won’t be able to mail your complimentary copy of the magazine to you because the good old days of putting something in an envelope and then buying a stamp and the slipping it into that big red post box have gone. Well, they have gone as far as this little village is concerned but modern technology has even reached our mountain and you can view almost anything and everything on Google. And please don’t forget that if you have a plate of chips anywhere on the Mountain, let us know if it was exactly the way you like them. But, then again, variety is the spice of life and them’s my sentiments!
